Verve
Founded in 1956 by Norman Granz, the American jazz label Verve Records united the catalogs of Clef Records (1946), Norgran Records (1953), and Mercury-licensed releases. Throughout the '50s and '60s, Verve collaborated with major jazz figures like Spike Jones and even released live albums by Shelley Berman. In 1961, Granz sold Verve to MGM for $3 million. Under producer Creed Taylor, the label shifted to a more commercial approach, cancelling several contracts. He introduced bossa nova classics like Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd’s Jazz Samba and Getz/Gilberto. While jazz remained Verve’s core focus, the label also signed rock and folk acts like Frank Zappa, The Velvet Underground, and The Blues Project.
By the '70s, Verve, now a PolyGram label, merged its Mercury jazz catalog with Philips. After PolyGram’s 1998 merger with Universal Music Group, Verve evolved into The Verve Music Group. In the '80s and '90s, it gained new life through reissues and innovative projects like the Verve Remixed series, blending classic tracks with modern electronic music.
