A&M

Founded in 1962 by Americans Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, A&M Records (named after their initials) became one of the most successful independent labels of its time. Known for artists like The Police, Supertramp, The Carpenters, The Sex Pistols, and Janet Jackson, A&M was acquired by PolyGram in 1989, which was later absorbed by Universal Music Group in the late 90s. Although the acquisition marked the end of A&M as a truly independent label, its name lived on, with notable releases in the 2000s from artists like Sting and the Black Eyed Peas.
