Interscope Records

In 1989, film producer Ted Field and record producer Jimmy Lovine came up with the idea of creating an alternative label called Interscope, with the aim of giving producers and emerging artists more creative freedom. By distributing and marketing the releases of hardcore hip-hop label Death Row Records in 1992, the label became embroiled in the controversies surrounding gangsta rap, a musical movement criticised for glorifying violence and misogyny. This did not stop Interscope from becoming the first label in 20 years to hold the top four positions in the Billboard charts, thanks in particular to records by No Doubt, 2Pac and above all The Chronic by Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, which sold over 3 million copies within a year of its release. In 1998, Interscope Records merged with Geffen Records of the former MCA (now Universal Music Group) and A&M Records of PolyGram to become Geffen A&M Records. Since the 2000s, Interscope has built a star-studded empire, signing projects by Lady Gaga, Eminem, Madonna, Lana Del Rey, Maroon 5, Selena Gomez, Imagine Dragons, Kendrick Lamar and many others.
