Daughter of Swords

Under the name Daughter of Swords, American musician Alexandra Sauser-Monnig writes emotionally rich songs that land somewhere between folk and experimental indie pop. A member of the Appalachian folk group Mountain Man, she made her solo debut as Daughter of Swords in 2019 with Dawnbreaker, an intimate, folk-based album. Sauser-Monnig briefly reunited with Mountain Man in 2020, then returned with the denser, more adventurous solo outing, Alex, in 2025.Following the release of their 2018 standout, Magic Ship, Sauser-Monnig stepped away from her longtime folk group Mountain Man to make a solo record. Expanding on the band's spartan folk sound, she created a more textured and liminal sound on Dawnbreaker, her first outing as Daughter of Swords. Produced with Sylvan Esso's Nick Sanborn and featuring guest vocals from her former bandmates, the album was released by Bella Union in 2019. Mountain Man reunited the following year to release their third album, Look at Me Don't Look at Me. In the years that followed, Sauser-Monnig evolved her own style into something more cerebral, experimental, and even playful. Her sophomore album, Alex, was released in 2025 by Psychic Hotline and introduced a spikier sound that mixed distorted guitars, synths, and more electronics into the mix.
