keiyaA

Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Keiyaa creates avant-R&B infused with jazz, hip-hop, and experimental electronic music suited for both movement and rumination. Her intensely reflective songs are both inward and outward looking, examining mental health, physical intimacy, and the stressors of modern life. A wave of acclaim reached the Chicago native in 2020 with the release of Forever, Ya Girl, her independent debut album. Subsequently signed to XL Recordings, Keiyaa returned in 2025 with the more turbulent Hooke's Law. While her recordings are primarily solitary efforts, she's not averse to collaboration, having contributed to tracks by the likes of Armand Hammer, Mike, Nubya Garcia, and Loraine James.Chakeiya Richmond hails from Chicago's South Side, where she was born and raised. She performed as a youngster in the Chicago Children's Choir, and in seventh grade took up alto saxophone. The instrument remained Keiyaa's main pursuit as she studied at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Columbia College. She backed fellow Chicagoans like Chance the Rapper, Mick Jenkins, Vic Mensa, and Noname, then wrote and produced Work, her heady and resonant debut EP, released in 2015. She relocated to New York and returned in 2019 with "Do Yourself a Favor," a spaced-out take on a song written by Pepé Willie (first recorded by his band 94 East, then by former member Prince, and then by the Time's Jesse Johnson, the first to give it a commercial release). Before the end of the year, Keiyaa was featured on Elucid's "Legalese." "Do Yourself a Favor" turned out to be a prelude to Forever, Ya Girl, which Keiyaa self-released in March 2020. Through word of mouth and critical support, it became one of 2020's most acclaimed albums, landing on the year-end lists of many publications. Also that year, Keiyaa appeared on albums by Medhane, Armand Hammer, and Mike, the latter of whom had co-produced a handful of tracks for Forever, Ya Girl under the name DJ Blackpower. Over the next several years, Keiyaa continued to be highly sought after for a number of roles on projects from Melanie Charles, Nubya Garcia, Niecy Blues, Maxo, and Mhysa, among others. Signed to XL Recordings, who made Forever, Ya Girl more widely available, Keiyaa put together Hooke's Law, released in October 2025. Keiyaa wrote and recorded the album after a phase of artistic inertia and the conception of a play, Milk Thot, the stage production of which featured some of the material.
