Alain Altinoglu

With major posts in both the operatic and symphonic realms, conductor Alain Altinoglu is gaining a strong reputation among various audiences. He is the chief conductor of the La Monnaie opera house in Belgium and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Altinoglu has also recorded as a collaborative keyboardist and is an important educator. He has a substantial recording catalog that includes a 2024 performance of Florent Schmitt's mime dance La Tragédie de Salomé.Altinoglu was born on October 9, 1975, in Paris. His family background was Armenian via Istanbul, where the family acquired a Turkish name. Altinoglu studied at the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSMD). He joined the school's faculty soon after graduating, and by 2014, he was the director of its conducting program. Altinoglu made his recording debut in 2005, leading the Orchestre National de Montpellier in a performance of Pascal Dusapin's opera Perelà, Uomo di Fumo on the Naïve label. The following year, he was part of a pioneering performance, conducting an orchestra accompanying a concert by techno artist Jeff Mills in an early example of the fusion of electronica and classical music.In 2011, Altinoglu made his first guest appearance at La Monnaie, and that house announced that he would become music director at the beginning of 2016. His contract there has been extended through 2031. He has guest conducted at many major operatic venues, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, and, in 2015, the Bayreuth Festival, where he led Wagner's Lohengrin in a new production. Altinoglu guest conducted the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, also known as the hr-Sinfonieorchester (Hessische Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester), for the first time in August of 2019. At the end of that year, the orchestra named him its new chief conductor, effective with the 2021-2022 season. That contract has been extended through 2028. Altinoglu is also artistic director of the Festival International de Colmar in France.As a conductor, Altinoglu has recorded with various orchestras for the Naïve, Decca, Fuga Libera, and Alpha labels, among others; for Alpha, he made his first recording with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony in 2024, featuring works by Florent Schmitt. He is also a pianist, backing his wife, mezzo-soprano Nora Gubisch, on the album Folk Songs in 2014. He continues to teach at the Conservatoire de Paris.
