Capitol
Capitol Records is best known for bringing the Beatles to America, signing the Beach Boys and Frank Sinatra, and for becoming one of the first major record labels on the American West Coast. Founded in 1942 by Johnny Mercer and Glenn Wallichs, with financial backing from Buddy DeSylva—a songwriter and producer at Paramount Pictures—it quickly became Hollywood's answer to the dominant New York labels like RCA and Columbia. In 1955, the British company EMI acquired Capitol Records, and since 2012, it has been part of the Universal Music Group. Over the years, Capitol has signed an incredible lineup of artists, including the Bee Gees, ABBA, Nat King Cole, the Beastie Boys, Aerosmith, Beck, The Cure, the Spice Girls, and Katy Perry.
