With a skitterish, experimental take on the D.I.Y. rap sounds of the 2020s, rapper-producer Xaviersobased emerged as one of the pioneers of the jerk subgenre in the early stages of the decade. Moving between rap collectives such as 1c34, So Evil Boyz, and Surf Gang, he landed his breakout hit with 2024’s “40,” before signing to Atlantic in 2025. Born on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, N.Y.C., American rapper/producer Xavier Lopez began his career as xaviersobased in 2016, emerging online with instrumental single “;;;;;;;;;;” at the age of just 12. With a heavy focus on pitched-up vocals and bass-heavy sonics, his early sound was developed over early experiments like “Fdsgtry 436 Gtrtwy,” before he began his career in full in 2020. That year saw the rapper debut across four EPs, two solo projects (Axajwjn 124643 Jahsnbje and Marble Blast Ultra) and collaborative EPs Casino (with Clost) and Twin Peaks (with Heroinsick). Things accelerated rapidly in 2021, the most prolific year of the rapper’s career: in 12 months, he issued his debut album 2,000, debut and sophomore mixtapes Store and With, seven EPs, three collaborative EPs, and a number of loose cuts. Tracks like “jesus christ,” “turn up!!,” and “feather” were emblematic of the rapper’s skittish sound, collages of bass-blasted percussives, hazy technological synths, and pitched-up vocals. 2022 proved a similarly busy period, giving way to two albums (Nothingness and And When), three mixtapes (Who Are You?, Someone Help, and Install), and four further EPs, with tracks like “patchmade” and “classist” beginning to gain traction online. He started 2023 with a similarly prolific run of EPs, issuing six that year, before issuing the collaborative mixtape The MostHated SoBased Tape (with samosthated). A much slower 2024 proved the breakout year for the rapper: “40,” a collaboration with Surf Gang's Nettspend and Evilgiane, became his first viral hit, quickly followed by hyped mixtapes Keep It Going Xav and With 2. Soon initiated into Surf Gang himself, Xav appeared at the collective’s collaborative event with NTS in Miami, which was commemorated with the release of 2025 live mixtape Live from Surf Gang x NTS: Miami. On the back of this success, he landed a deal with Atlantic in 2025, making his major-label debut with melodic EP Once More that August.
