With The Last Dinner Party's baroque, gothic vibe commanding attention, it's good to be reminded that Florence Welch is still the active queen of the sub-genre. Her sixth full band album as Florence + the Machine feels like an instant classic, building on the power of Lungs and Dance Fever (not to mention Siouxsie and the Banshees' The Scream and PJ Harvey's To Bring You My Love) before it. Welch leans all the way into wayward witchy woman imagery; not for nothing is the Halloween release date. The gleeful title track, written with Mitski and about reconciling an artist's private self and onstage persona, weaves together ghostly coven moans, funhouse cries, a mega bouncy rhythm and cheer captain energy before wrapping up with an a cappella group chant: "The witchcraft, the medicine, the spells, and the injections/ The harvest, the needle, protect me from evil/ The magic and the misery, madness and the mystery." Welch highlights the through line from Siouxsie to Tori Amos on "Witch Dance," singing the high notes like her eyes are fluttering back in her head and supported by a menacing beat and spectral howls. Set to a Romani-inspired rhythm, "Perfume and Milk" is positively tactile as Welch offers up a damp, dark forest of fine details: "Blossoms beaten by rain," winter jasmine, fallen fruit, "the rot and ruin." There is wonderfully witchy humor in lines like "Listening to a song by The 1975/ I thought fuck it/ I might as well give music by men a try" from "Music By Men" and "It must be nice to be a man/ And make boring music/ Just because you can" from "One of the Greats" (on which Welch channels the spoken-word theatricality of Patti Smith). "Early in my career, I was consistently ridiculed and derided for the bigness of my expression … So maybe this is a 15-year outpouring of frustration," Welch has said of the latter, which finds Mark Bowen of Idles nailing hot-fuzz guitar. Bowen produced the record with the omnipresent Aaron Dessner, as well as James Ford (who also worked on The Last Dinner Party's 2024 debut), and Everybody Scream captures the spookiness of stillness but does not shy away from the band's "bigness." The chorus of "Kraken" gallops like a runaway horse and needs no words other than "ahhhhhh!" sung with in-excelsis-deo glory, while "Sympathy Magic" sounds like Welch's tremolo is blowing the doors off some Celtic moor cottage. Stringed instruments are wild and feral on "You Can Have It All." Sings Welch: "Dug a hole in the garden and buried a scream/ And from it grew a bright red tree … And when the wind blows you can hear it." You sure can. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
