In 1997, Norwegian trumpet player Nils Petter Molvaer released Khmer on ECM. It was his first record as a bandleader - after making a name for himself as an active member of iconic Scandinavian jazz ensemble, Masqualero. The album was an instant hit with its atmospheric sound, full of electronic textures, and driven by swirling rhythms that draw their grooves from rock and trip-hop. Molvaer embarked in a direction for the genre, building bridges between the groundbreaking explorations of Miles Davis during the seminal Bitches Brew sessions of the 1970s and the Nordic jazz tradition embodied by icons such as Jan Garbarek and Terje Rypdal.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of this iconic masterpiece in 2023, Molvaer - today considered to be one of the undisputed pioneers of Scandinavian electro-jazz - has decided to breathe new life, sound, and energy into the album’s original tracks, revisiting them in a live setting. Surrounded by a few of the musicians present for the original sessions, namely, Eivind Aarset on guitar and Rune Arsenen on drums, Moalver enriches his musical material with the addition of DJ Jan Bang and Pal “Strangefruit” Nyhus. Each improvisation unfurls into a dense, abstract network of sliced-and-diced samples, opening up all-new perspectives that are as lyrical and expressive as ever - but now even more direct, raw, and cutting. The music of Khmer Live in Bergen, powered by a more pronounced rhythmic density and intensity, radically emancipates itself from the Nordic haze in order to take the pulse of the present moment, even distancing itself at times from its sophisticated hedonism to explore landscapes that are dark, distressed, and powerfully hypnotic. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
