With On Modes, pianist Anthony Romaniuk continues the deep sonic exploration he began on his previous albums, Bells and Perpetuum. In those earlier projects, his focus lay in the phenomena of resonance, the play of repetition, and the way musical ideas circulate across different eras. This new recording extends that journey by taking musical modes as its starting point—those ancient structures that predate the major-minor system and offer a particularly rich expressive palette.
Used since Greek antiquity and found throughout numerous folk traditions, these modes form the very fabric of the record. Each possesses its own distinct color and atmosphere, ranging from the serenity of the Ionian to the unstable darkness of the Locrian. Romaniuk maps out a musical path that traverses a full spectrum of emotion, moving from shadow into light.
The program seamlessly blends works by contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt and György Ligeti with Romaniuk’s own personal arrangements and compositions. The listener also encounters unexpected influences, from traditional folk to alternative music, reflecting an aesthetic that is deliberately borderless.
The instruments themselves are central to this research. Much of the album was recorded on a Klavins M450 upright piano; its exceptionally long strings and large soundboard produce a deep, immersive resonance. Alongside it, a Fazioli concert grand provides a different dynamic and tonal color, further broadening the record’s sonic palette. Anthony Romaniuk has delivered much more than a standard piano recital; this is a true "sound laboratory" where ancient traditions, personal creations, and singular timbres meet.
