For his latest album, Daniel Lopatin has chosen to venture into the annals of forgotten internet history. It all started when he noticed the sudden disappearance of a collection of CD samples from the 90’s and early 2000’s which had previously been stored on Internet Archive, the so-called safekeepers of the world’s online heritage. In losing this source of inspiration, he realized that not even the internet can escape impermanence. After recovering from the initial shock, he decided to make an album recreating the sound of these CDs, like a bridge across the space-time continuum. The idea of exploring cultural memory feels particularly well-timed at this point in music history when the industry’s higher-ups are opening its doors to artificial intelligence, which does nothing other than reinterpret the musical heritage it’s been made to listen to. “It is a return to a process-oriented form of music making for me that I felt best evoked a certain kind of madness and ennui in the heart of culture today,” Lopatin explains. Although his thought process may feel like a sort of “sonic hallucination,” Lopatin’s style remains unchanged, painting vibrant tableaus whose undulating textures bond together layers of different frequencies, making for extremely “interdimensional” music, and an album that perfectly lives up to its name. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
