Not content with a triumphant return to grace in 2024 with the excellent Happiness Bastards—their first studio effort in 15 years—the Robinson brothers have doubled down just two years later with a flamboyant follow-up. The Black Crowes are cherished for their signature sound: a feverish, soul-steeped Southern rock driven by Chris Robinson’s vocals and anchored by his brother Rich’s unmistakable mastery of the riff. Yet, few could have anticipated such a potent and immediate successor.
While it rings with the authentic spirit of the Georgia "crows," A Pound of Feathers refuses to simply lean on a familiar recipe. Recorded in just ten days, once again under the direction of producer Jay Joyce, the album marks a return to a rawer, more rhythmic rock that occasionally recalls the energy of 1990’s Shake Your Money Maker.
"Profane Prophecy" makes an immediate impact with its rock-solid opening riff, followed by the groovier "Cruel Streak," which retains a sharp, biting guitar tone—a thread that continues through "It’s Like That" and "You Call This A Good Time." Of course, a Black Crowes record would be incomplete without their trademark backing vocals and gospel flourishes, and A Pound of Feathers offers them in abundance. These are balanced by more measured moments, such as the striking "High and Lonesome," which concludes with melancholy strings, providing a perfect segue into the brief acoustic ballad "Queen of the B-Sides."
Both varied and deeply committed to the sound the band has championed since their debut, this latest release finds the creative duo at the peak of their powers. It captures a newfound harmony between the Robinson brothers, who have successfully reclaimed their legacy while avoiding the kind of sibling friction that so often derails bands at this stage of their career. A new classic. © Guillaume Ley/Qobuz
