Known by her DJ Bunnyhausen alias, Catherine Backhouse returns for her second album as Xylitol. This latest venture on the Planet Mu label follows 2024’s standout Anemones. Blumenfantasie is an exquisite slice of drum’n’bass—a record that is both delicate and cosmic, reflecting the DNA of an artist who spent years behind the decks at London’s Kosmische Club, the "krautrock club" founded in 1996 to champion ethereal soundscapes.
Listening to the floral fantasy imagined by Xylitol feels akin to entering a dream state. She masterfully blurs the line between the electronic and the organic with percussion that skips like a stone across water and strings that fall like raindrops. The title track, "Blumenfantasie," is utterly hypnotic; "Lights" provides an ethereal lift; "Halo" plays with Super Mario-style sounds; and "Melancholia" lives up to its name with drones that unfold like petals.
