Hailing from a Melbourne suburb, The Belair Lip Bombs get their great name from a cult skateboard wheel made in the late '70s and their great sound from a wealth of inspirations. On their second LP and first for Third Man Records, incisive New Wave guitar kicks off "Another World," which poses a dichotomy of a cool main vocal track with a fevered backing one. There's a dreamy, jangle-pop feel to "Smiling," on which you can hear singer/guitarist Maisie Everett exhale at the end after giving her high-end register a workout. "Burning Up" is a soulful, piano-driven power ballad with early-century emo leanings. Easygoing "Price of a Man" applies sunny, light-touch ska guitar before heavier rain-cloud guitar comes barreling in. But more than anything, this four-piece is part of a great power-pop tradition. You can hear it and positively feel it in the swirly guitar, crashing drums and start-stop ending of "Again and Again," which also includes glimpses of fiddle sawing away. "Back of My Hand" unfurls an irresistible groove and showcases big, strutting guitar between verses, along with an exuberant chorus and Everett tearing into the line "They don't have time for me/ Killing them with my dreams." "If You've Got the Time" is pure fun, with guitarist Mike Bradvica joining in on harmony. It's not hard to hear connections to fellow Australasians The Beths on that one, while a conversation with Melbourne's terrific Alex Lahey—about not letting anyone walk all over you—inspired "Don't Let Them Tell You (It's Fair)." There's an unshowy muscularity to the song, as well as a charming gleefulness in the way the lead and backing vocals purposely don't line up perfectly. "Look what I've become," Everett sings defiantly, "And just stop talking to me." Some of her best lyrical work comes with "Hey You," as she grows itchy and impatient with a lover mysteriously pulling away: "I could feel that there was something in the air/ Motherfucker just say what you mean … You bring the silence, I'll bring the news." The song also throws an intriguing curveball. The music swaggers like Kings of Leon's arena rock, the vocals posture like The Strokes' Julian Casablanca—and, unlike anything else on the album, it's all driven by a synth loop. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
