Two years after releasing Capacity to Love, the dynamic and captivating “superproduction” that united an impressive array of prestigious guests spanning the entire vocal spectrum of contemporary pop music (from De La Soul and –M–, to Tank and the Bangas, Dear Silas, DSmoke, Gregory Porter and Sharon Stone) under the leadership of renowned producers Henry Was, NuTone, and Tony Romera, Ibrahim Maalouf has created what is likely his most ambitious album to date: Trumpets of Michel-Ange. He remains largely loyal to his signature aesthetic, aiming to produce music that’s both demanding and accessible all at once. This time, he places an even greater emphasis on the famous quarter tone trumpet invented by his father 50 years ago, which Maalouf now produces and sells himself under the brand “Trumpets of Michel-Ange” or T.O.M.A. Maalouf picks up where he left off in this album, exploring the sounds of the Orient, diving with his instrument into a baroque oasis of glimmering, brassy fanfare, emerging with decidedly hybridised music that glistens with lyricism while bridging the gap between modernity and mediterranean folk traditions.
Although the trumpet virtuoso allows his music to take a few detours to places like New Orleans, West Africa, Iran and the Caribbean, featuring guests like Trombone Shorty, Toumani Diabaté, Golshifteh Farahani and Endea Owens on several tracks, he maintains close ties with the moods and grooves of the cultural and musical spheres of the Near and Middle East. Sophisticated, elegant solos backed by luxurious arrangements and purposefully simple and playful melodies celebrate the simultaneously festive, luxurious, and universally appealing character of his artistic touch, which never feels formulaic.
