Founded 50 years ago, Austria’s Innsbruck Festival of Early Music quickly became an integral part of the Baroque music landscape as one of the genre’s most important annual gatherings in Europe, thanks to bold programmation that often redirects attention to works that have faded into obscurity. This new album immortalizes two performances of Tommaso Traetta’s Ifigenia in Tauride held on the 27th and 29th of August, 2025, under the direction of Christophe Rousset. Not only that, but it’s also the first-ever recording of this work, which had originally premiered at the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna for the House of Habsburg in 1763. The five main characters of this iteration of Ifigenia were originally played by the period’s biggest stars, each earning their very own, highly virtuosic aria in the Neapolitan style, of which Traetta was one of the greatest representatives. Christophe Rousset was already familiar with the composer, having previously recorded his Antigona. On this new recording, Rousset excels at bringing out the colors of each instrument and highlighting Traetta’s pulsating rhythms while leading both his ensemble Les Talens Lyriques as well as the Novo Canto choir, who accompany the five young leads on stage: Rocío Pérez (Ifigenia), Karolina Bengtsson (Dori) and Suzanne Jerosme (Pilade) in the women’s roles, alongside tenor Alasdair Kent (Toante) and countertenor Rafal Tomkiewicz (Oreste) representing the men. With its spectacular vocal flourishes, Traetta’s Ifigenia in Tauride embodies a vision of opera that takes cues from the Neapolitan tradition with its stereotypical characters and highly codified musical structure. © François Hudry/Qobuz
