Discovering the French mélodie repertoire during her studies in New York is just one unusual aspect of Réunion-born soprano Julie Roset's career, and here she presents a sparkling program dedicated to this delicate art. After studying at the Geneva University of Music, she entered the Juilliard School where she worked with Renée Fleming, among others, during a masterclass that the illustrious American soprano gave at Carnegie Hall. Winner of France's Victoires de la musique classique in 2025, Roset made her Metropolitan Opera debut in Richard Strauss's Arabella before singing in the role of Sophie in the new production of Jules Massenet's Werther at Paris's Opéra Comique in January 2026. Her new album takes its title, M'a dit amour, from the Charles Kœchlin mélodie that opens the recital—a banner for the distinctly French spirit of amorous declaration which has nourished the mélodie from the humanist poets of La Pléiade to the present day. Supported by Susan Manoff's lively and intelligent piano, the young French soprano delivers a program of great originality inspired by the influence of Claude Debussy and Francis Poulenc, while deliberately avoiding Gabriel Fauré—perhaps to better position herself within a certain modernity. The discoveries come one after another in this album, which includes female composers such as Mel Bonis and Lili Boulanger, with an extract from the latter's magnificent Clairières dans le ciel. Contemporary music also features with three mélodies that perfectly illustrate the spontaneous, unconstrained style of Isabelle Aboulker (born 1938), composer of some fifteen operas and chamber operas and more than 25 works for young audiences. Manuel Rosenthal, Reynaldo Hahn, Georges Enesco and Louis Beydts are also present, creating a suite of light, dreamy vignettes which question and answer each other through an astute arrangement. In creating this rare and precious program with her pianist, Roset wanted "to invite listeners to experience a full range of emotions connected to the idealization of the beloved woman" while also sketching an outline of her own personality. A true ode to women, this album showcases Roset's vocal and expressive qualities—equally at ease on the operatic stage as in concert—perpetuating an art form too often thought to be disappearing when it still captivates an entire new generation of opera singers. © François Hudry/Qobuz
