The history of rock music, and of metal and its other subgenres, is full of surprises. In their own way, Linkin Park are proving how, with determination, nothing is truly impossible. The group’s return to the spotlight sparked plenty of debate, with many questioning whether it was too soon to reignite things after the tragic passing of lead singer Chester Bennington. But From Zero has put an end to the debates in just over half an hour. Ahead of the album, four singles and several electrifying live performances introduced the group’s new female voice, Emily Armstrong, whose singing is as jagged as it is melodic. Armstrong had a seemingly insurmountable challenge in front of her, but she has completely risen to it.

Short, sweet, and to the point, From Zero is perhaps the most raw and hard-hitting album ever recorded by the Californian group (just listen to the explosive introduction to “Casualty,” or the screams from the very start of “IGYEIH”). The title not only nods to the group’s early days when they were called Xero back in 1996, but it also signals a new beginning. This highly anticipated album exceeds all expectations. First of all, because its songs sound unmistakably like Linkin Park, alternating Mike Shinoda’s rapping with Emily Armstrong’s vocals, framed by the powerful riffs, samples, and layers of keyboard which have contributed to forging the group’s unique sound from the very start (especially in tracks like “Two Faced” or “Cut the Bridge”). Plus, each track has a catchy chorus that will surely echo through arenas all over the world. This kind of undertaking takes real talent.

So, are Linkin Park really back? Absolutely! But are they really starting from scratch? Not quite. Of course, Armstrong isn’t Bennington, but her voice has nevertheless managed to make a strong impact on her very first release with the band, standing proudly without fearing comparison. After all, didn’t AC/DC do the same with Brian Johnson, or Alice In Chains with William DuVall? This comeback is more than just a publicity stunt; it’s the revival of a band that still has a lot to say. © Guillaume Ley/Qobuz

Review: LINKIN PARK - From Zero

The history of rock music, and of metal and its other subgenres, is full of surprises. In their own way, Linkin Park are proving how, with determination, nothing is truly impossible. The group’s return to the spotlight sparked plenty of debate, with many questioning whether it was too soon to reignite things after the tragic passing of lead singer Chester Bennington.
