This may well be the most highly anticipated album of the year, not just for alternative metal fans, but for fans of a wide variety of other genres as well. Five years after the monumental Ohms, Deftones have come back to wow us with an all-new musical marvel. This should come as no surprise. Whereas the discographies of other bands of their generation like Korn or Limp Bizkit can be a bit hit-or-miss, group leader Chino Moreno hasn’t led his Sacramento-based group astray in over three decades. Private Music is the latest evidence that Deftones are still on top, and in a league of their own. Relative to the more raw, pared-down sound of Ohms, the group’s tenth album features more varied atmospheres, without ever compromising the sheer power that emanates from Stephen Carpenter’s guitar.
The weighty riffs of “My Mind Is A Mountain,” “Locked Club,” and “Cut Hands” prove the musicians’ bark to still be just as strong as their bite. Deftones play around with every facet and feature of their DNA: the synth and other electronic elements on tracks like “Ecdysis” and the six meandering minutes of “Souvenir” are courtesy of keyboardist, Frank Delgado, meanwhile the lovely “I Think About You All The Time” shows off a lighter, more laid-back side. Deftones are in peak condition, with singer Chino Moreno leading the way with his signature sweet, melancholic vocals, punctuated by raw screams that feel on the edge of breaking.
Private Music shares some of the atmospheres and the overall sound of Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan, both produced by Nick Raskulinecz. Although he’s back in the producer’s chair for this tenth album, repeating the same old recipe would be out of the question. Private Music manages to pull off being varied in its content yet coherent in its sound (it’s still very much a Deftones album, but with a little something extra), making for one the best albums of the year. © Guillaume Ley/Qobuz
