It's been a while since the last proper Nine Inch Nails album, and even that one—2018's Bad Witch—failed to fit neatly into their discography, thanks to its brevity (just around a half-hour long) and that, sonically, it had much more in common with the soundtrack work that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross had been creating since 2010. While it wasn't terribly surprising that Reznor and Ross were tapped to provide the music for the latest Tron film, it was somewhat unexpected to see the album credited to Nine Inch Nails.

From its opening seconds, Ares bears the sonic hallmarks of late-period NIN: brooding electronics, serrated synths, processed noise, and a production style that prioritizes texture and mood. Tracks like "Echoes" and "Infiltrator" evoke the creeping dread of Year Zero, with pounding mechanical rhythms that would not feel out of place on The Downward Spiral if not for their sleeker digital polish. (Also worth noting are the thick, punchy synths of "Infiltrator" that explicitly evoke Daft Punk's score for Tron: Legacy.) Yet, unlike those earlier records, much of the score opts for atmosphere over narrative; in lieu of linear song structures, we get cues and fragments designed to serve the screen rather than the concert stage.

Still, Ares contains undeniable high points. "As Alive As You Need Me To Be" delivers a weary yet defiant vocal performance, while "Who Wants To Live Forever?," featuring Judeline, is a surprising injection of vulnerability. These moments provide emotional anchor points that the instrumental cues often lack, transforming the album from mere sonic architecture into something closer to the catharsis NIN has always offered. Tron: Ares is not merely a functional soundtrack, but a work meant to sit alongside the band's other work, even as it navigates the practicalities of cinematic scoring. © Jason Ferguson/Qobuz
