In the fall of 2025, Daniel Avery dropped his most ambitious album to date, Tremor, a telluric record chock-full of rock guitars, born out of a desire to express a particular state of mind and being. Avery’s transformation from DJ into musician in his own right was made official by this album, released on the megalabel Domino. The dancefloor is still very much part of his identity, however, and the proof lies in this companion album of Midnight Versions. Avery, who apparently still had a lot left to say, has dropped a series of “club edits,” which he describes as songs “aimed squarely at the strobe light.” This parallel universe is packed with breakbeats, from “Greasy off the Racing Line” and “Neo Pulse,” up until the sensational finale “Disturb Me.” A bit of house turns “New Life” on its head, as does the touch of industrial techno on “The Ghost of Her Smile,” whereas the title track, “Tremor,” originally a highly-produced shoegaze track, finds a more pared-down reflection under the midnight moon. A more diffuse halo illuminates this record that chooses the same palette, but becomes less dense, as if the artist can now breathe easy, a sign that the work carried out on Tremor has finally paid off. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Review: Daniel Avery - Tremor (Midnight Versions)
