Recordings of Chopin on period pianos are not abundant, and this 2025 release by Justin Taylor stands out from the group. He plays an upright piano marketed in its time as a Pianino, not the exact piano used by Chopin during his stay with George Sand in Mallorca in 1839, but similar to it, and Taylor chose material he thought would fit the instrument, not big polonaises but mostly preludes, with a few nocturnes, mazurkas, and odd rarities including a transcribed Polish song, a reconstructed paraphrase of Bellini's "Casta diva" from Norma, and the debated Contredanse in G flat major. So, what one has is not just a historical instrument performance, but one matched to the particular uses of the instrument, something rare enough in any era. As it happens, Taylor's performances are effective indeed. The prelude is a quasi-improvisatory genre, and his playing captures the spontaneous quality of the music, including some light ornamentation. There are several of the big Chopin hits included here, such as the Prelude in E minor, Op. 28, No. 4, or hear the loose tempos in the "Raindrop" prelude, the Prelude in D flat major, Op. 28, No, 15. Those give the feeling of hearing the piece anew, and they mix nicely with the more obscure music so as to give the feeling of being invited into the composer's studio. The dimensions of the whole are admirably suited to the music; Chopin wrote several pieces intended for large crowds, but generally, he was more oriented toward the salon, and one rarely hears him that way. A fresh and important Chopin release, this made classical best-seller charts in the spring of 2025.
