When 22-year-old Xavier Lopez announces "I just blocked a bitch because she's 16/ And I don't fuck bitches if they don't show ID" on Xavier's first single "iPhone 16," he's either reminding haters the bar is in hell or he's standing up against the glamorized recklessness that marks the much-maligned era of TikTok rap. In his fluffy Auto-croon he puts a finer point on it in the hook: "Being smart is hard/ Ignorance is bliss." Considering the recklessness abound in 2026 America, it's refreshing to hear a young artist on the rise admit they don't want to mess up or take the easy way out of doing the right thing. That's the kind of emo-rap that resonates, even if it's framed as personal groupie protocols. Maybe that's even the reason why: "Not Like Us" really obliterated decades of popular music fetishizing jailbait. And Xaviersobased's unpreachy, hard-to-categorize cloud-rap can lead other Gen Zs by example, partly because his melodies stick and his inclusive vibe continues his popularity streak.
A string of increasingly lauded mixtapes, especially 2024's Keep It Going Xav, led to this official debut by stretching easy and infectious melodies over heads-only excursions in subgenres like jerk and plugg. On Xavier, his floaty textures almost approach chamber music at times, filtered through video-game synths like all 2020s upstarts. The representative "Minute" lays out Jersey club kick drums in fits and starts beneath an obtrusive synth-string that could've been nicked from Aphex Twin's childhood-referencing Richard D. James Album.
Lopez doubles his entire vocal on "Wrk Wrk" to the pleasing effect of giving bedroom musings a hypeman and a stage. The mesmerizing "Packs Gone" is downright ambient underneath the star's mumbly, self-interrupting flow, and, of course, its references reflect his age: "Shit don't make sense like a YouTube Poop." And he layers his falsetto at different pitches to arrange "Get Them Racks Then When I Go Pt. 2" like a damn Boyz II Men song over its simultaneously intense and dreamy loop.
