For land to stay fertile, you occasionally have to leave it fallow. This was exactly the case for Ryan West aka Rival Consoles, who spent a year away from the studio after realizing that making music didn’t make him feel anything anymore. Once the soil had recovered, the English musician went right back to working the land, with simple tools at first: a guitar and a drum set in front of his couch. This is how the closing track “Landscape from Memory” came about, as the initial seedling of this release by Erased Tapes (West was actually the label’s very first signed artist back in 2007).
Now that the floodgates have opened, Rival Consoles’ latest album has broken through in the same euphoric spirit as his 2022 release Now Is. From the outset, we find his unique way of caressing the synthesizer on “In Reverse,” with its acoustic strings supported by a celestial layer of synth, right before the single “Catherine,” with its incredible bassline that redefines wobble by giving it an electronica twist. There’s also melodic house (“Drum Song”), epic sagas (“Known Shape”), and, of course, long ambient tracks (“Nocturne,” “Tape Loop,” and the title track). The Englishman keeps up with the times by raising the BPM all the way up to 140 on “In a Trance,” an exercise in style that he pulls off with great finesse, and even sends a brand-new transmission to extraterrestrials with “Soft Gradient Beckons.” An abundant harvest for Rival Consoles! © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Review: Rival Consoles - Landscape from Memory
