It was a long time coming. After a meteoric rise fueled by two landmark albums and an 18-year hiatus, Gnarls Barkley—the high-concept pairing of vocalist Cee-Lo Green and producer Danger Mouse—has made a surprise return for a third and final act.

Following the massive success of 2006’s St. Elsewhere (and its ubiquitous global hit "Crazy") and 2008’s The Odd Couple, the duo has finally broken their silence with Atlanta. Named after the city where both artists grew up, the record serves as a homecoming: Green initially made his mark with the Goodie Mob collective, while Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) rose to fame via The Grey Album, his ingenious mash-up of Jay-Z and The Beatles. The two musicians describe this final project as a "return to square one" and a sense of "coming full circle"—a release that likely would have arrived much sooner had it not been for Green’s well-documented legal troubles.

Musically, Atlanta recaptures the vintage patina of the duo's early work, offering a multi-generational exploration of Southern sounds that weaves together soul, R&B, hip-hop, gospel, and Americana. From the opening tracks, the listener is on familiar ground; the orchestration is largely organic, save for a few electronic diversions like "Cyberbully (Yayo)."

Whether it is the lead single "Pictures," the infectious hook of "Line Dance," the funky, clap-heavy "Turn Your Heart Back On," or the soaring gospel ballad "Let Me Be," the creative chemistry between Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo Green remains as potent as ever. It is a fitting conclusion to one of the most brilliant and fleeting chapters in modern pop. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Review: Gnarls Barkley, Ceelo Green & Danger Mouse - Atlanta
