"Nusantara" is a Javanese word which means "outer islands" and it refers to Indonesia—the world's largest archipelago, made up of thousands of islands. It's also the name of the country's future capital, a new city being built in the middle of a jungle to replace Jakarta. All this might make you dizzy, but not as dizzy as listening to Nusantara Beat's debut album. Formed in Amsterdam by six musicians with Indonesian roots (Indonesia being a former Dutch colony), Nusantara Beat create an eccentric musical hybrid, built on melodies, atmospheres and vocals from Indonesia, packaged up in arrangements that blend funk and post-rock (let's say post-funk), with the echo of western guitars resonating through a canyon.

While singer Megan De Klerk's candy-sweet voice turns out to be more lysergic than sugary, the guitars and metronomic rhythm conjure up space-time journeys that drift like something out of an old Cocteau Twins or Tortoise record. In other words, Nusantara Beat is unlike anything else in today's exotica scene—but it all just makes sense. Its members have played in bands such as Jungle By Night (electronic-tinged Afrobeat) and Atlın Gün (an homage to Anatolian psychedelic rock), two flagships for the world-music-infused pop which Amsterdam has become a hub for in recent years. It's impossible to categorize this as simply pop or world music. Nusantara Beat’s music is a bit of everything—only better. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
