Principal trumpet of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra Sebastian Berner won first prize at the 2022 International Maurice André Competition in Paris. His latest album features little-known or even completely forgotten works for his instrument, brought together around French composer Henri Tomasi’s Trumpet Concerto, composed in 1948. Assistant conductor of the Orchestre National de France, working under Désiré Emile Inghelbrecht, and a deeply religious man, at one point in his life, Tomasi withdrew from the secular world to become a Dominican monk. His concerto, a reflection of one of the happiest periods of his life, became essential trumpet repertoire from its very first recording by Maurice André in 1963. Accompanied by his colleagues in Frankfurt under the direction of Elias Grandy, Sebastian Berner also presents us with Belgian composer Joseph Jongen’s Trumpet Concerto and the first-ever recording of the Concerto op. 17 by his student Léon Stekke. The album features a second world-premiere recording: Chants de Kervéléan by Charles Koechlin, a composer who has yet to earn the attention he deserves in spite of being one of the most interesting of his time.
