Spiritbox have secured their spot in the metalcore hall of fame with a second album that hits so incredibly hard. The group, led by singer Courtney LaPlante, manage to stand out while still following the rules of the genre. More intense than its predecessor (Eternal Blue, released in 2021) and with higher production quality, Tsunami Sea is darker and more aggressive from the offset. LaPlante’s voice is more menacing than ever (especially on the verses of “Fata Morgana,” and in the entirety of “Black Rainbow” and “Soft Spine”), although she always knows how to reign it in once the chorus comes around. This versatility is part of their recipe for success. Since Spiritbox’s music is often overtly mainstream (“Tsunami Sea,” “A Haven with Two Faces”), LaPlante’s vocals are what prevent it from spilling into the overly sentimental territory that far too many artists of the genre end up falling into.

The group continue to show off their talent for combining metal with electronic elements, perfectly exemplified by “No Loss, No Love.” Here we hear a tinge of Meshuggah on certain guitar riffs, and although on the whole it’s a bit more reminiscent of Periphery, with hints of Architects coming out to play too, in the end it’s 100% Spiritbox. Tsunami Sea starts off by barrelling into darkness before taking a lighter turn on the last three tracks, whose discrete drum and bass loops and touch of Auto-Tune will likely help them make their way onto more mainstream audiences’ playlists. The group is fully aware of this as well, which makes sense for an album that, in spite of its massive sound and vocals capable of giving most of the metalcore scene a run for its money, aims to reach as many people as possible. © Guillaume Ley/Qobuz
