A pivotal figure in modern jazz piano, Marilyn Crispell began her career in the demanding world of contemporary classical music. In the mid-1970s, she underwent an aesthetic transformation influenced by John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor, eventually showcasing her improvisational prowess within Anthony Braxton’s avant-garde quartet. Also closely connected to the European improvised music scene, she reached a wider audience in the mid-1990s after signing with the ECM label. Under her own name, she released a series of landmark albums that explored more introspective territories—whether in a trio format on Nothing Ever Was, Anyway, Amaryllis, and Storyteller, or in a duo setting on Azure.

It is within a similarly minimalist and intimate framework that she returns on the meditative, twilight-hued Memento. This time, she is joined by Swedish double bassist Anders Jormin, a collaborator since 1994 with whom she had never previously recorded in such an intimate duo format. The pianist immerses the listener in a soulful, melancholic world defined by expressive restraint and a quiet, lyrical intensity.

Moving between entirely improvised pieces—such as the elegiac opener "For the Children" or the telepathic, aptly named "Dialogue"—and a series of original compositions, the partners develop subtle, moving personal digressions. Rich in ellipsis and nuance, they create a shared "deep song" whose emotional authenticity is built on a profound economy of language. A truly beautiful record. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
