It’s relatively common for parents to pass on the music bug to their children. For them to form an artistic partnership is a bit less so. The Gallands are a Belgian jazz group made up of Stéphane Galland on drums and his son Elvin on the keys and production. For this album, the duo also welcome aboard Selah Sue, fellow Belgian singer-songwriter and performer best known for her song “Raggamuffin”, whose skillset covers not only soul, but also reggae and R&B. It was on stage at the Jazz Middelheim festival in Anvers that they first met and decided to make an album together. Movin’ makes an impression with the symbiotic way in which each musician's respective specialties and strong personalities complement one another. On tracks like “Rise As One” and “Into Forever,” Stéphane Galland’s rhythmic virtuosity pairs perfectly with Elvin’s effusive piano and Selah Sue’s tender vocals. The trio prove to be just as comfortable with hip-hop adjacent tracks (“In a Minute”) as they are with smooth R&B (“You & Me”). Mixed by Russell Elevado (Alicia Keys, D’Angelo, Jon Batiste), the album also stands out for its lyrics, which touch on mental health and depression, recurring topics in Selah Sue’s music that have touched the singer personally. This beautiful album’s hints of bittersweetness come through the feverish piano on “Break Me Free,” as well as the record’s melancholic closing track “Nothing to Fear.” ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

Review: Selah Sue, The Gallands, Stéphane Galland, Elvin Galland - Movin'
