Arvo Pärt’s artistic trajectory can almost be divided into a “before” and “after” Credo. Created in 1968 in Tallinn by Neeme Järvi, father of Paavo Järvi, the work marks a decisive turning point in the lives of the two artists. Not only was the composition immediately banned for its uncompromising, politically critical message - eventually leading to the Järvi family’s emigration - but it would also prompt Pärt to enter a period of nearly ten years of artistic silence. It was only after this that the composer shook up the music world with his infamous Tintinnabuli style, thus becoming one of the most decisive voices in modern minimalism.

From the very beginning, Credo linked the fate of Arvo Pärt with that of the Järvi family, and this close relationship still marks their artistic bond today. Hence, conductor Paavo Järvi made the decision to dedicate this year’s edition of the Pärnu Music Festival to the 90th birthday of the most famous Estonian composer in the world - accompanied by an album devoted solely to his work. Ever since its founding in 2010 by Paavo Järvi, the festival has attracted countless local and international artists to Estonia’s most highly sought-after resort town.

The record brings together ten works in total, outlining the different phases of Arvo Pärt’s creative trajectory. From his dodecaphonic debuts with Credo, to the Tintinnabuli technique of “Fratres”, “Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten”, and “Mein Weg”, up until the more “romantic” pieces of his late period, like “Swansong” and “Silhouette”. Paavo Järvi manages not only to coherently present the richness of Pärt’s music in one fell swoop, but also to capture the universal appeal of one of the most important composers of our time. An expansive musical landscape unfolds before us courtesy of the Estonian Festival Orchestra, the Estonian Male Choir, as well as the Ellerhein girls’ choir and alumnae, who do not simply perform Pärt’s music, but reveal its spiritual depth – an echo that resounds the world over, far beyond his homeland of Estonia. © Lena Germann/Qobuz
