First released in 1982, this complete retrospective of ABBA’s singles has the advantage of offering a much broader look at the legendary Swedish group’s career than ABBA Gold, the infamous 1992 compilation that has sold more than 29 million copies. By presenting a chronological overview, this new album emphasises how they managed to evolve with the times, especially in terms of their recording techniques. From sound engineer Michael Tretow’s first demos, drawing inspiration from Phil Spector’s innovations (“People Need Love,” “Ring Ring,” “Waterloo”), up until their early attempts at digital recording and mixing (“The Visitors”), and even the artificial vocal glissando on the final verses of “Lay All Your Love On Me,” the group has always paid careful attention to cutting-edge production on their songs, which was undoubtedly one of the keys to their enduring success.
Yet another pillar to ABBA’s legacy was their irresistible melodies, arranged in styles that are more diverse than you might think: disguised as disco and Europop, their songs borrowed from the cabaret world (“Money, Money, Money”), as well as 1950’s rock (“I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do”). This compilation serves as a reminder of how, quite fittingly, ABBA has now become a source of inspiration for the artists of today: “Mamma Mia” became the theme song of the 1999 musical of the same name, and “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” was remixed by Madonna on her 2005 hit “Hung Up.” ABBA: The Singles has been re-edited to mark the 50th anniversary of “Waterloo” winning Eurovision. This time around, the record doesn’t end with the rather bittersweet tracks that characterised The Visitors (1981), foreshadowing the group’s imminent breakup. Instead, it closes off with songs from their 2021 come-back album Voyage. Review: ABBA - The Singles (The First Fifty Years)
First released in 1982, this complete retrospective of ABBA’s singles has the advantage of offering a much broader look at the legendary Swedish group’s career than ABBA Gold, the infamous 1992 compilation that has sold more than 29 million copies. By presenting a chronological overview, this new album emphasises how they managed to evolve with the times, especially in terms of their recording techniques. From sound engineer Michael Tretow’s first demos, drawing inspiration from Phil Spector’s innovations (“People Need Love,” “Ring Ring,” “Waterloo”), up until their early attempts at digital recording and mixing (“The Visitors”), and even the artificial vocal glissando on the final verses of “Lay All Your Love On Me,” the group has always paid careful attention to cutting-edge production on their songs, which was undoubtedly one of the keys to their enduring success.
Yet another pillar to ABBA’s legacy was their irresistible melodies, arranged in styles that are more diverse than you might think: disguised as disco and Europop, their songs borrowed from the cabaret world (“Money, Money, Money”), as well as 1950’s rock (“I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do”). This compilation serves as a reminder of how, quite fittingly, ABBA has now become a source of inspiration for the artists of today: “Mamma Mia” became the theme song of the 1999 musical of the same name, and “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” was remixed by Madonna on her 2005 hit “Hung Up.” ABBA: The Singles has been re-edited to mark the 50th anniversary of “Waterloo” winning Eurovision. This time around, the record doesn’t end with the rather bittersweet tracks that characterised The Visitors (1981), foreshadowing the group’s imminent breakup. Instead, it closes off with songs from their 2021 come-back album Voyage.
