From her pseudonym alone, it’s clear that Ego Ella May’s role model is Ella Fitzgerald. Growing up in the London suburbs, she fell in love with the American singer’s phrasing, diction, and scatting: “It was so new to me and so interesting that it became a bit of an obsession that I tried to copy,” she explains. Yet for Ego Ella May, songwriting is just as essential as singing. She’s developed a highly personal writing style, where each track adds on to a sort of extended dialogue with herself. She keeps the conversation going with Good Intentions, her second album.

From the album’s very first notes, its unique atmosphere is striking: organic soul steeped in jazz, hazy gospel, and touches of afrobeat, dominated by the warm textures of the piano and the guitar. “Footwork,” with its sweet, glittering arrangements, allows for the muted trumpet to emanate a subtle, reserved sort of elegance. On the opposite end of the spectrum, “What We Do” touches on lost love, but in a lighthearted tone that continues on danceable tracks like “What You Waiting For” and “Sister.” Arranged around delicate strings, “Tarot” reveals a more fragile side of Ego Ella May, who also wears her heart on her sleeve on “Don’t Take My Lover Away” and “Love Is a Heavy Thing.” “Not Free” has a similarly direct tone, following in the footsteps of Marvin Gaye and his soul-powered form of activism. Ego Ella May’s lyrics are often quite straightforward, but her music stands out for its impressive softness: for her, fighting for what’s right doesn’t mean lowering her artistic standards. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
