The New Eve is Rising is as fresh as debuts get. While The New Eves' musical ancestry clearly stems from Patti Smith's Horses, The Velvet Underground and The Raincoats, their electrifying, commanding voice is very much their own. Most of all, Nina Winder-Lind's liberated and unashamed performances have the uncanny ability to throw you off balance.

The band's mission statement on their Qobuzissime-awarded debut is made clear in their opening track, "The New Eve," on which Winder-Lind states with steely certainty: "The New Eve is of earth/ Granite, ochre, magma, dirt/ All the bones in her body are holy/ All the stones in her pockets are homely." Most of the Brighton four-piece's songs follow these earthly themes, with a penchant for Victorian lovers—and have as much penchant for sex and death as Nick Cave.

Ella Oona Russell's Moe Tucker-esque drums on "Highway Man" instantly builds anxiety around the song's story, a retelling of Alfred Noyes' 1906 poem about a doomed romance between a woman and a highwayman. While the poem is lauded for its great oral storytelling potential, the band put their own spin on the lyrics. Their wordplay emulates Patti Smith's own fondness for repetition to create urgency, which Winder-Lind skillfully captures by singing, "running, running, running."

"Rivers Run Red" centers Violet Farrer's violin and Kate Mager's hypnotic bass, which again draw the listener in. While their music may be deceptively minimal, The New Eves are able to create drama with it and work in symbiosis with its sung parts.  That's because despite the band's knotty literary roots, intuition and feel are at the center of the band's musical approach. "You can hit something and it can sound good. You can literally do anything and it's fine. We're just like, strike a match box, hit a camping cup …," Farrer has said about their sound. While some of their peers choose to tell stories with disaffected emotional distance, The New Eves throw their whole selves into the feel of words and music, expressing the joy and excitement of having a voice at all. © Lottie Brazier/Qobuz
