After reviving his career in the early 2000s, in the wake of the French touch movement (which most certainly owed everything to him), Marc Cerrone, global superstar of the golden age of disco during the 70s and 80s, is back with a symphonic best-of album. The concept has been very much in vogue over the past few years, giving great artists near the end of their careers the chance to be immortalized. Yet at 73 years old, Cerrone doesn’t seem anywhere near ready to hang up his gloves. In fact, he’s been a DJ for the past ten years, regularly playing at clubs. In the summer of 2024, he was also one of the headliners at the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony, and there’s no denying that the chorus of “Supernature,” sung acapella under the Eiffel tower, sounded pretty damn good.

The idea to rework his greatest hits alongside an orchestra originally stemmed from the C’est pas classique (“It’s not classical”) festival in Nice. Always on the lookout for new opportunities, Cerrone was happy to revisit his discography and reimagine symphonic versions of his music, very much in the spirit of Hans Zimmer, one of his favorite composers. Since he regularly remasters and remixes his tracks anyway so as to have a greater impact on the dancefloors of the nightclubs he plays on the weekends, he took to the concept straight away. The album is a collaboration with renowned American film music composer Randy Kerber (Titanic, Forest Gump…), who has also worked with Quincy Jones and Barbra Streisand, and, as Cerrone explains, they tried to “stay as loyal as possible to the original arrangements by the late Raymon Donnez (aka Don Ray), one of my greatest collaborators of all time.” Upon listening, it’s hard to nitpick over the new arrangements of “Love in C Minor” or “Give Me Love,” which, on top of the crystal clear sound quality, remain as danceable as ever! © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
