Among extremely commercially successful rappers, J. Cole is kind of a folk hero. His first hit "Work Out" got dissed by Nas, but instead of going in the expected direction of rising rappers slaying their idols, he wrote the earnest "Let Nas Down." 2014's hit, "Wet Dreams," was about his lack of sexual prowess growing up. And one could imagine why a song that goes "I wanna fold clothes for you" (2016's "Foldin Clothes") would help double the audience numbers of a macho rapper who alienates women, but it's still somewhat of a shock that every one of Cole's studio albums has topped the Billboard 200 chart. So there's no reason to expect his first official full-length in nearly five years won't follow suit, especially after he very quickly bowed out of his role in the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef by quickly deleting the diss track "7 Minute Drill" from 2024's Might Delete Later (ha!) mixtape. In an extremely Cole move, he apologized for it, too.

Allegedly Cole's swan song, The Fall-Off is a double album that starts with a John Denver sample ("29 Intro") and chronicles the ends of his 20s and 30s, respectively, on "Disc 29" and "Disc 39." "Safety" borrows Eminem's "Stan" technique with each verse composed of a series of voice notes written from the perspective of old friends to Cole himself. Cole's skills and temperament are such that it matches Eminem for narrative detail without ever leaving the realm of brotherhood and kindness. "Like breathalyzer tests I'm tryna walk a straight line," he explains on the next track, "Run a Train," with chorus gulped by Future, whose rap persona couldn't be further from that. "Stoppin' this violence is like bringing the Gaza Strip peace," the track continues, exorcising past demons like sometime collaborator Kendrick's Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers before him. On the big-picture "The Fall-Off Is Inevitable" Cole so astutely raps the story of his life in reverse there's no doubt it will impress Nas. Of course Cole trips about his "Legacy" on a track of the same name, and on "Bunce Road Blues" he blurts out "fuck J. Cole, I don't even want this role/ I want to rebuild myself" and, by way of explanation, "pardon me if I sound like a broken record/ I come from the brokest of homes." Thusly, his nearly two-decade career is owed to an empathy and vulnerability that predates emo-rap and The Fall-Off arrives more welcome than ever in the current state of the world. © Daniel Aaron/Qobuz
