It's crazy to think Mayhem is only Lady Gaga's seventh album—not counting various soundtracks and collaborations with Tony Bennett—given her outsize impression on the cultural landscape. Even crazier, it reads like a greatest hits album. The strobelight-ready electropop opener "Disease"—laden with low growls and high falsetto notes—recalls the gothic drama of her early hit "Poker Face." The melodramatic balladry of "Blade of Grass" echoes "Shallow." "Zombieboy" blends cheerleader chants, funk bass lines and a power bridge to remind you of the great "Bad Romance." Techno-glowsticky "Abracadabra" borrows from it, too, while also nicking the melody of Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Spellbound." Sweaty club banger "Garden of Eden" mimics the slinky power of 2011's "Bloody Mary," complete with a catchy chorus ("I'll t-t-take you to the Garden of Eden") that smacks you right in the face. That's maximalist Gaga's talent, of course, and she doesn't hold back on the first nine or so songs, which hit hard. The super-hooky synth-disco number "Vanish Into You" is like a windstorm, and that's a compliment. Credit an assist from producer Andrew Watt, who earned his rock 'n' roll bona fides working with Pearl Jam, the Rolling Stones and Ozzy; this is a dance record that leans hard on rock elements and motifs. Gaga has said "Perfect Celebrity" was originally conceived as a grunge song by way of The Cure's "Never Enough," and while you can still hear it in the guitar line, it's also heavy with her classic bombast of heavy breathing and diva runs. The artist has called it "the most angry song" she's ever written, and the lyrics reflect the trap of her ivory-tower existence: "I've become a notorious being/ Find my clone, she's asleep on the ceiling/ Now, can't get me down/ You love to hate me/ I'm the perfect celebrity." Elsewhere, she nods to Bowie ("Killah," featuring French DJ Gesaffelstein, wraps its arms around the iconic "Fame" riff), Taylor Swift (poppy outlier "How Bad Do U Want Me") and '70s soft rock via "Die With a Smile," her lush, loungey duet with Bruno Mars. But for the most part, the Mayhem pastiche is a mirror.
